11-year-old boy gets free chips from local store after helping put items away, mother goes crazy on him for "stealing," dad takes his side: 'He did nothing wrong'

Back in the day, kids had jobs. Like real jobs, not just helping neighbors mow lawns. They worked in shops, fixed bicycles, or herded cattle. Child labor laws put a stop to all that, but we can appreciate some pros and cons to the situation. There are still places in the world where children work, but usually it's in a family owned business. The point in the story is hardly even about a child working. The story centers around a kid and his friends going to a local store for some snacks. They didn't have quite enough money for the chips they wanted, so the cashier says they can help put some groceries away and get the chips for free.

When the child comes home and tells his parents, his mother freaks out. His father understands the innocence around the situation, and doesn't think there's anything wrong with what his son did, or the cashier. But his mother's words get the better of him.

The mother is overreacting. How could she think her son is stealing when he was given permission to take the chips for free? Besides, it's not like she took a TV from BestBuy for free, it's a simple bag of chips.
